The cluster of new entrants on the Australian IPTV stage are bursting through with competitive gusto. On Australia Day, Stan, the joint venture between Fairfax Media and Nine Entertainment Co, officially launched and as anticipated priced at AUD$10 per month with a 30-day free trial. The new streaming provider is going head to head with Foxtel’s Presto, the soon to be landing Netflix and existing stalwarts Quickflix and FetchTV.
Stan has entered the market at around 750 titles and is strongly pushing its exclusive deal to fast track the Breaking Bad spin-off series Better Call Saul in February. Content deal partners include Sony, BBC Worldwide, ABC, SBS, and Viacom. Stan also launched with a content deal coup struck with Roadshow Entertainment. Under the deal the new IPTV player will have exclusive SVoD rights to films including The LEGO Movie, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and The Wolf of Wall Street and TV content such as Utopia and Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms.
Stan has yet to announce take up numbers for the new service other than it is "much bigger than anticipated." The streaming player has the advantage of having giant media partners to assist in executing a consumer media blitz including heavy print and TV advertising campaigns over the Australian long weekend.
Meanwhile, rival Foxtel’s Presto TV, which launched earlier in January has a library of over 1,500 films and over 100 TV titles priced at $14.99 per month. It has announced that it will also be commissioning original Australian programming and source other content exclusively for the platform. Presto is an alliance between Foxtel and Seven West Media, and subscribers have options of either paying a monthly fee of $9.99 for the TV stream, the same amount for Foxtel’s 10-months-old Presto Movies or $14.99 for both.
Network Seven is supplying local dramas to the content mix and from HBO, Presto TV has exclusive SVoD rights to binge-worthy shows including The Sopranos, Entourage, The Wire, True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, Girls and Veep.
Streaming supremo, Netflix is due to launch in Australia on March 31 and is expected to price its service at $9.99.
