CombiTel was selected to design and supply entertainment and training systems for the Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) project.The fourth generation LHD will provide the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with an integrated amphibious capability for various types of military operations such as surface operations, air operations and seabasing. BAE Systems, the prime contractor, will deliver two Canberra Class LHD ships between 2014 and 2015. These ships will be the largest navy vessels ever operated by Royal Australian Navy: they will have Full Load Displacement of over 27,800 ton and will be able to carry over 1,400 ADF personnel.

 

The military operation support capabilities provided by these ships will include the following:

  • Combat Management System

  • Damage Control Systems, including a citadel and providing exceptional survivability and flexibility during operations

  • Hospital: comprehensive medical facilities will include two operating theatres, intensive care and dependent care wards, laboratory, X-ray, pharmacy and a dental surgery

  • Recreation facilities will include eighteen recreation rooms, two gymnasiums, two reading rooms, video on-demand, TV, music, telephones and Internet access

 

 CombiTel's solution addresses the ship’s recreation and on-board personnel training requirements using the latest IP-based technologies available within the commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) product range. The system architecture includes all components necessary for creation and distribution throughout the ship of both live and on-demand content.
